Portland, OR

Czopek & Erdenberger was responsible for the furniture budgeting and procurement for this 107,000 sf, $29 million project that opened in summer of 2011.  The Bud Clark Commons set a new standard for services by combining housing with a community resource center.  Located adjacent to Union Station and bordering the Pearl District, Bud Clark Commons achieved LEED Platinum certification through its extensive use of energy-efficient technologies and other sustainability measures.

The mission of Bud Clark Commons is accomplished through three fundamental components; a 90 bed transitional and temporary shelter for men, a walk-in day center that provides a range of services including shower facilities, free clothing for interviews, and job training skills, and 130 efficient studio apartments fully furnished for single women and men seeking permanent housing.

In addition, over 30 administrative offices for Transition Project Inc. and Home Forward are located at Bud Clark Commons.

Furniture was selected to meet stringent requirements due to issues of communicable disease control and bed bug infestation.   Furniture had to be easily cleanable, repairable, durable, and safe.  Equally important was the desire to select furniture that would create a warm, inviting, and uplifting environment.  For example, bright green polypropylene chairs bring bursts of color to each space while being easily cleanable and incredibly sturdy.  Locally manufactured custom colored ‘bed bug resistant’ beds were used in the shelter and apartments.  Lamps in the shape of cubes are located in each unit and can double as a seat and/or coffee table while bringing light to the space.  In addition, public space furniture is flexible and easy to reconfigure to help support a range of activities.

Portland, Oregon

The Martha Washington, a 58,000 sf building constructed in 1923, underwent a historic renovation to provide a mix of 108 studio and 1-bedroom affordable housing units.  Of these units, 50 operate as Permanent Supportive Housing which serves the homeless and chronically mentally ill populations.   The project received LEED Silver certification.  While focusing on sustainable and extremely durable materials, C&E developed the interior finishes and furniture selection in keeping with the historical nature of the project.  As an example, marmoleum tile was selected for the lobby, corridor, and unit flooring so that if tiles become damaged and beyond repair, they could be easily replaced.

Eugene, Oregon

Czopek & Erdenberger was a design team member for a complete renovation of the existing food service portions of the student union building in 1998.  The new food service areas incorporated a ‘food-court’ as well as common dining spaces.  A new coffeehouse, billiards and game area were also added.  C&E was responsible for developing finishes and specifying furniture for all public dining and lounge spaces as well as design and detail of interior character for the University-operated Bakery, Coffeehouse and Marketplace food vendors.  Interiors portion of the construction totaled approximately $300,000.

Corvallis, Oregon

OSU’s University Housing and Dining Services approached the design team with the challenge of transforming a large existing open area into a variety of dining experiences and to also allow for multiple uses of the new space for dances, large and small gatherings, and educational events of different sizes.  And the biggest challenge was to accomplish this work with a very restricted budget, much of which went toward upgrading the kitchen facility.

For this major renovation of the 27,740 sf dining facility, a variety of interior spaces and seating areas were developed to meet multiple uses.  Walk-up counters at the convenience store provide ice cream and smoothies.  Conference rooms became part of the streetscape.  Different seating types were developed to help personalize the large space and include areas with banquettes, tables, stand-up counters, lounge areas and the ‘Stammtisch’ community table – a place to gather, find company and conversation.

An existing large conference room was transformed into an Espresso and bakery venue that serves students from early morning until late night.

Corvallis, Oregon

Czopek & Erdenberger was the interior design member for the renovation of the OSU Memorial Union Commons Area.  Included in the project was a major redesign of public corridors and food service areas, student activities area, as well as renovation of the existing dining spaces.  The redesign emphasized the creation of inviting and varied dining and study spaces for students, while allowing for the main dining area to be rearranged and used as a large-scale, multipurpose event space.  The challenge was to create a space that met stringent functional requirements while relating to the neoclassical architecture of the much loved 1926 building that is viewed as the heart of the OSU campus.

Eugene, OR

Relocated their new headquarters operations into a contemporary office building, Pacific Continental Bank wanted a traditional interior environment constructed of quality finishes and furnishings.  In establishing their identity as a bank where customer service is valued above all, it was important that the interior design create a sense of permanence and tradition while providing support for the banking operations and privacy for customer transactions.

To achieve these goals, Czopek & Erdenberger designed a richly detailed, transitional style interior.  It combines a custom-designed paneled cherry teller row with cherry furniture, natural stone, leather, textured fabrics and dense carpeting.  A center light well with lighting fixtures suspended within recessed coffers, along with lamps at the teller row, soften the building’s contemporary overhead lighting.

The project involved a complete remodel of the lower floors of an existing tenant office building, locating the main banking operations on the first floor, and administrative and executive offices on upper floors.

Czopek & Erdenberger provided a full range of interior design services for a major remodel to the aging existing clubhouse. In conjunction with the architectural team, a new design character was developed for each major space in the club including; Lobby/Reception, Conference, Dining Room, Tee-Cup/Tee Room, Locker Rooms, Kitchen and Storage Facilities.  Furniture, finishes and artwork were also selected to compliment the new look.

Vancouver, WA

Completed in 2009, the Kearney Breast Center, part of  the Southwest Washington Medical Center campus, represents a big leap for the state of womens’ healthcare in the region.  The  Center integrates screening , diagnosis and treatment of breast disease and  boasts state-of-the-art mammography rooms, diagnostic ultrasound equipment  and  bone density scanner.  As the architectural interior designers on the project, Czopek & Erdenberger worked closely with the client and major donor group, many of whom were breast cancer survivors themselves or had experience with it through family members.  The vision developed by the group was for a space that was life-enhancing, and was filled with color and art.  In response to this vision, C&E specified warm-toned bamboo flooring, patterned carpets, and maple wood paneling contrasted with bold pink accent walls and fabrics.  Furniture has a hospitality-feel with textural and colorful fabrics accented by dark wood and glass topped tables.  Original artwork is featured throughout the spaces.

A major feature of the reception is the donor wall designed by C&E comprised of glass and limestone tiles.  The waiting area incorporates a specialty gift shop and tea bar, while near the entry is a dedicated conference area for women’s health activities and events.  Through the use of sliding etched glass and wood panels, the space can be used as one large conference room, be divided into two smaller rooms, or be completely opened up to the adjacent reception and waiting area, providing maximum flexibility for events and programs.

Portland, OR

Czopek & Erdenberger was part of the integrated design team which developed the architectural interiors for all Tenant Improvement spaces in this 321,085 sf. 14-floor facility, completed in Fall, of 2006.  The Peter O. Kohler Pavilion expands the capacity of the existing hospital and acts as a hub between the patient care areas of the existing campus and the research and development activities at the Center for Health and Healing located in Portland’s South Waterfront District, and accessed via the Portland Aerial Tram which disembarks on the 9th floor of the building.

The building includes  The Center for Women’s Health, eighty-six medical, surgical and intensive care beds, a cancer center, inpatient cancer units, and eight state-of-the-art operating rooms.  The interiors of the Peter O. Kohler Pavilion were developed as part of a comprehensive planning process designed to integrate architecture, interior finishes, furniture and art in an environment that would reflect OHSU’s position as a world class leader in research, technology and healing.  Public circulation was designed to capture views of the two outdoor garden areas as well as to initiate the development of a “superhighway” highlighted with terrazzo flooring and artwork as a first step in a planned public circulation link that will travel through all of the main campus buildings.  Public spaces include timeless elements such as patterned terrazzo flooring, glass and wood paneling which provide opportunities for the display of art as well as the “OHSU Story” and mission.
